Y'ever read Heinlein's "Life-Line?"
About a guy who invents a machine that can analyze your body, right now, and predict when you will die. He uses this improbable plot device to examine many of the same questions poised in the Times article.
Oh, and I didn't answer your question. I'm with Woody Allen: "I don't want to achieve immortality through my work; I want to do it by not dying."
